All About Me
Carol Gyurina

Classical, folk and rock violinist now offering lessons. in Melrose MA or online. Recently trained as a Suzuki teacher, and also as a teacher of the O'Connor string method with Mark O'Connor.  Studied at Berklee College of Music.  I play a variety of styles - a member of the Melrose Symphony, Jiblantos a roots rock 'n roll band, Honky Tonk Heartache, a classic country band, as well as with my husband, Steve, a local singer-songwriter.  I believe classical (and Suzuki method for young children) is the best start to playing, but can customize lessons to your genre of interest.

What is the Suzuki Method?

The Suzuki Violin Method was developed by Shinichi Suzuki in the mid-20th century.  It is based on "the principle that all children possess ability and that this ability can be developed and enhanced through a nurturing environment. All children learn to speak their own language with relative ease and if the same natural learning process is applied in teaching other skills, these can be acquired as successfully."

  • Suzuki lessons start early: Ages 3-6 are typical

  • Students listen to music before they start to play

  • Young students learn by ear

  • In the first years, the parent works with the teacher and the student, and attends all lessons, and assists the child in practice under the guidance of the teacher

  • The Suzuki Method is a proven method for developing talented violinists, but perhaps more importantly, it teaches children character: the ability to focus and work toward long-term goals with joy, and who value beauty and empathy

In my studio - any student under the age of 10, will use the Suzuki method, with parent involvement. I use Suzuki materials with transfer students, but take a more individualized approach with students over 10.

Carol teaches viola, violin, and chamber music to my daughters, ages 12, 13, and 15, and I can't recommend her highly enough. She has a wonderful and nuanced understanding of child musical pedagogy, and is a bright and enthusiastic teacher. Carol's manner is warm and engaging, but she also knows how to keep the student on task and shepherd them through the hard work of mastering a difficult passage or musical technique. I greatly appreciate Carol's recognition of the student's individuality and her tailored approach. Whether your child is a complete beginner to playing a string instrument or further along, they will be fortunate indeed to have Carol as a guide on their musical journey. - Melanie Morash, Melrose mom of three
